Is the best resolution the one you keep?
The period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is but a cherished memory and many of us will look to the new year with promises in hand for change. Decisions made to commit to a better way of life by exercising more, eating less, and loving thy neighbor are but a few we may have considered? Sometimes change is thrust upon us yet still falls under the umbrella of resolution as both require acceptance to facilitate lasting effects. Admitting is the first step toward resolve. Identify then plan.
While adhering to established health guidelines, many turned to the great outdoors for a change of scenery whether it be a backyard oasis, a daily walk around the neighborhood or the purchase of camping equipment putting the distance in social distancing. It helps to have a destination in mind when setting out on any journey; a goal orientated purposeful path to a determined end. One place to start is heading in the direction of the Lansing Public Library which is centrally located within 1.8 to 2.5 miles from the town borders. In translation, it is only a seven-minute car ride, fifteen-minute bike ride, or a fifty-minute walk from all points directional. Enjoying the surroundings while traveling keeps the journey bearable as does the current playlist. An added bonus to all we set out to accomplish is the detours we never thought to take. There, off the beaten path, in the clearing waits a joy worth remembering. This, the solution fully experienced.
Defined resolution has its place in music—the passing of a discord into a concord during the course of changing harmony, medicine—the disappearance of inflammation or of any other symptom or condition, chemistry—the process of reducing or separating something into its components, and in physics—the replacing of a single force or other vector quantity by two or more jointly equivalent to it. So, where do we go from here? Breaking it down may look something like this. The six weeks that represent the year-end holidays is but a fraction of the fifty-two weeks that make up the entire year. A small portion that when calculated results in less than one piece of a nine-piece pie. In perspective, replacing discernment with acknowledgement is the difference between avoiding or embracing what is at hand—problem focused or solution driven—not just today but for all days.
In 2020 we found solace in immediate family, essential institutions, and a new or renewed hope in better times to come. Resolution is a word with Latin origins meaning to loosen or release. Letting go of the former is the path to reconciliation; a new year, a new day, a new beginning. Include the Lansing Library in your plans when researching information on the how-to, where-for, and the what-if. Until then find joy. Laughing has many health benefits such as increasing blood flow and improving mental and physical resilience not unlike a vigorous workout session, so says Psychology Today. If you find nothing to laugh about, laugh about nothing. Laugh...check. Exercise...check, check. If it is motivation you lack consider the wisdom of King Solomon when he said “This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones” or the foresight of Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra, “You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I'm not hungry enough to eat six.” Let the day begin.
